Short answer: Cover patient safety, infection control, pharmacology, medical-surgical care, cardiovascular and respiratory care, emergencies, maternal and child health, mental health, ethics and law, and public health. Start with the safety and pharmacology topics, because they appear across many questions.
A note before you start
The official syllabus differs by profession and can change. Use the DHA website as your source of truth. The list below is a study guide built around common clinical subjects, not an official blueprint.
The ten subject areas we use
Meddex groups its questions into these areas.
- Fundamentals and patient safety: assessment, communication and handover.
- Infection prevention and control.
- Pharmacology and medication safety, including dose calculations.
- Medical-surgical and chronic disease.
- Cardiovascular and respiratory care.
- Emergency and critical care.
- Maternal and child health.
- Mental health and neurology.
- Ethics, law and professionalism.
- Public health and prevention.
A sensible order
Begin with patient safety, infection control and pharmacology. These ideas show up inside questions from every other area, so learning them first makes everything else easier.
Then move through the clinical areas in the order you find hardest. Finish with ethics and public health, which are shorter and reward careful reading.
Mix topics as the exam gets closer
In the last three weeks, switch from single-subject sets to mixed sets. The real paper does not announce the subject before each question, so practise switching.
