EMREE vs USMLE vs PLAB for doctors in the UAE: what each exam is for

EMREE7 min read

By Meddex editorial team7 min readThe EMREE residency exam

Short answer: EMREE vs USMLE vs PLAB for doctors in the UAE comes down to purpose. EMREE is a residency entrance exam for the UAE, USMLE is the United States licensing sequence, and PLAB is the UK General Medical Council test for international doctors. One does not replace another. Confirm what a UAE authority accepts with that authority.

EMREE vs USMLE vs PLAB for doctors in the UAE: the short version

Each exam belongs to a different system. EMREE is the Emirates Medical Residency Entrance Examination, conducted by the National Institute for Health Specialties through UAE University. USMLE belongs to the United States. PLAB belongs to the UK. Meddex is independent and not connected to any of them.

If your goal is a UAE residency place, EMREE is the exam described by the organiser and candidate sources. If your goal is to practise in the US or the UK, the other two are the routes for those countries. A pass in one does not turn into a pass in another.

Side by side

Figures are labelled by how well we could confirm them.

  • EMREE: residency entry in the UAE. Usually 120 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, on a computer, according to the organiser. Physicians only.
  • USMLE: United States licensing, in three Steps. Step 1 covers basic science applied to medicine, Step 2 CK covers clinical knowledge, and Step 3 covers managing patients in unsupervised practice, according to usmle.org. Question counts and timings vary by Step, so we do not quote them.
  • PLAB: UK General Medical Council test for international medical graduates, in two parts. The GMC describes PLAB 1 as 180 multiple-choice questions in three hours, with five options each, and PLAB 2 as an OSCE with 16 scenarios of 8 minutes each. Some third-party sites give other station counts, so check the GMC.
  • DHA licensing exam: not one of the three. It is the Dubai licence exam, a separate step. See EMREE vs DHA.

How the formats feel different

EMREE and PLAB 1 are written, single-best-answer papers. USMLE is also multiple choice but is organised by Step and by what each Step assesses. PLAB 2 is practical: you move through timed stations with actors, so it tests communication and examination, not recall alone.

EMREE blends internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, family medicine, psychiatry and public health, with weights published by the organiser. PLAB and USMLE are built on their own countries’ guidelines and systems, which is a reason not to share question banks between them.

What the UAE accepts: ask, do not assume

We did not confirm whether any UAE licensing authority or residency programme accepts a USMLE or PLAB result instead of its own requirements. Rules differ between the Dubai Health Authority, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and the Ministry of Health and Prevention, and they change. Read DHA vs DOH vs MOHAP for who licenses whom.

Do not rely on a forum, an agent or a prep site for this. Ask the authority or programme in writing and keep the answer with the date.

How to choose by goal

Start from what you want, then work back.

  1. A UAE residency place: read the EMREE exam guide and plan for EMREE.
  2. A Dubai licence to work as a doctor: read DHA exam for doctors.
  3. Training in the US: USMLE is the route for that country. Use usmle.org for the rules.
  4. Training or work in the UK: PLAB is one route for international doctors. Use the GMC guide, because eligibility and alternatives change.

Mistakes to avoid

Studying for three exams at once spreads you thin. Pick the one that matches your next real step and finish that first.

  • Mixing question banks. Each exam has its own style and subject spread.
  • Assuming one result is accepted everywhere.
  • Buying a package before you have read the official page for the exam.
  • Using a pass mark from a blog. Pass marks are set by the organiser and can change.
